In
1999, CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice and Alice Regional Hospital
opened new state-of-the-art, primary care facilities, which have
established Alice and Jim Wells County as a major regional, rural
health care center.
CHRISTUS
Spohn Hospital Alice opened its $20 million, 73 bed facility
to serve the health care needs of the region.
The hospital offers complete medical and surgical services including
pediatrics, obstetrics, skilled nursing, emergency and intensive
care, as well as cardiac and comprehensive diagnostic services.
The hospital is the newest facility of the CHRISTUS Spohn Health
System, which is based in Corpus Christi, Texas. CHRISTUS
Spohn is part of CHRISTUS Health, one of the 10 largest Catholic
sponsored health systems in the country. Sponsored jointly by the
congregations of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in
Houston and the Sisters of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, CHRISTUS
Health has more than 40 hospitals and long-term care facilities,
as well as dozens of other health services in more than 70 communities
in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Utah, as well as Monterrey
and Saltillo, Mexico. In April 2002, CHRISTUS Health awarded
a $25,000 grant to the Jim Wells County Community Network to provide
half of the required local funding match for the $500,000 state
community network implementation grant.

Alice
Regional Hospital has served Jim Wells County and South Texas
for more than 70 years. Its new $40 million
facility represents the largest business investment in Alice history.
Licensed for 138 beds, Alice Regional Hospital offers a full range
of acute and specialty care services to the region. Alice Regional
is one of 48 hospitals owned by Triad Hospitals, Inc., a major health
care corporation based in Plano, Texas. The hospital contributed
$1,000 to provide a portion of the local funding match for the $500,000
state community network implementation grant.

Healthy Communities Initiative
The Healthy Communities Initiative is a partnership of local
hospitals, health care organizations, and social service providers
to help improve the health and quality of life of county residents.
In April 2002, CHRISTUS Health awarded a $25,000 grant to the Jim
Wells County Community Network to provide half of the required local
funding match for a state grant to implement the Network, and to
support the establishment of Healthy Communities in Jim Wells County.
Healthy Communities is a world-wide initiative that originated with
the World Health Organization in the mid-1980’s, and is now active
in more than 50 countries. In the United States , more than 1,000
communities and 37 states are active in the program. For more
